Vision

Bringing the Right Priorities and Action to City Hall

Yesterday, Burlington was the primary choice in the region for housing, shopping, jobs, and entertainment. Today, Burlington is a community of choice - a community that people choose among several others in which to live, work and play. If Burlington is to remain the community of choice for our residents and businesses, all the elements that create a high quality of life must be nurtured to thrive and grow. And we must make our public policy decisions accordingly. As Mayor of Burlington, decisions concerning housing, economic development, public safety, city services, transportation, the environment, and city government will reflect my constant determination and commitment to increase our city’s quality of life.

Improve Neighborhoods

Although the city has made many advances to protect the quality of life in our neighborhoods, it has not been enough. I am committed to ensuring that Burlington remains the community of choice for our residents.

Promote Responsible Growth and Housing

There is simply not enough housing in Burlington. I will plan for responsible housing growth that meets the diverse needs of our community in a way that respects our well-established neighborhoods.

Increase Jobs and Support the Business Community

Burlington needs a healthy business community to provide good jobs that pay at least a livable wage. I will work with our business community so we remain the economic center of the region and I will take action to make businesses want to come, stay and grow in Burlington.

Create a Responsive and Transparent Government

Many residents complain that they don’t know what is happening in City Hall. They also complain that City Hall doesn’t listen to them. My administration will be responsive and transparent to the residents of Burlington.

Prioritize Excellence in Our Schools

Public schools are an integral part of our community and our future. Healthy schools are vital to the healthy growth and development of Burlington. I will actively work with the schools to support them in providing excellence and equity for all children.

Enhance Public Safety

Everyone has a right to feel safe in their home and in their community. I will work diligently to ensure that our public safety services provide us with a strong sense of security.

Strengthen Commitment to the Environment

Protecting our environment is essential to our quality of life. We have a duty to leave our children with an environment in better condition than the one we inherited. I will strengthen Burlington’s commitment to the environment, both locally and globally.

Promote Alternative Transportation

Although many residents in Burlington rely primarily on their car, a healthy mix of transportation opportunities that provide reliable means of transportation to those without cars, moves people away from their dependency on cars, and allows for ease of access throughout the city and region are vital to our sustainability and necessary if we are to grow responsibility. I will foster opportunities that promote and provide means of alternative transportation.

Keep the Waterfront Exciting and Accessible

Burlington has spent millions of dollars in purchasing and cleaning up former industrial lands along the city’s waterfront and restoring them to public use. But our revitalization of the waterfront is not complete. Large areas are not yet developed, and their future is largely undecided. The potential uses of these areas represent tremendous opportunities for the public. The existing plans for our waterfront are outdated. I will reach out to the community to develop a shared vision for our waterfront.

Fiscal Responsibility

We must create a budget process for the city that can be sustained without large increases to the property tax. I will ensure that city departments are run efficiently and deliver city services at affordable prices.
